Wildfire danger in Cyprus

Long dry summers, wind and heat make wildfires one of the biggest risks in Cyprus from May to October. The danger changes from day to day with the weather, the dryness of the vegetation and the wind.

This page shows the fire danger level forecast for each district for today and the next three days, on the six-step scale of the European Forest Fire Information System, from very low to extreme.

Source: European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), Copernicus Emergency Management Service. A forecast from weather data; the Department of Forests and the Fire Service issue the official warnings. Forest fire: 1407. Emergency: 112.

How is the fire danger worked out?

From the Fire Weather Index, which combines temperature, humidity, wind and recent rain to estimate how easily a fire would start and spread. EFFIS calculates it every day for all of Europe and the Mediterranean.

What should I do on a day of high fire danger?

Do not light fires or barbecues outdoors except in the fireplaces of official picnic sites when allowed, never throw away cigarettes, avoid work that makes sparks near dry grass, and park only on clear ground, never on dry grass.

Who do I call if I see a fire?

Call 1407 for a forest fire (Department of Forests, 24 hours, free) or 112 for the Fire Service and every other emergency. Say where you are as exactly as you can.

Is this the official warning?

No. The Department of Forests and the Department of Meteorology issue the official fire warnings in Cyprus. This page shows the European forecast, which helps you plan a few days ahead.

Why is Troodos often lower than the coast?

The mountains are cooler and moister than the plains and the coast, so the index there is usually lower, although the dense forest burns fiercely when a fire does start.
