What does an “excellent” rating mean?

It is the top class of the EU Bathing Water Directive. It is based on two kinds of bacteria (E. coli and intestinal enterococci) found in water samples taken during the bathing season over the last four seasons.

Does the rating cover litter, jellyfish or waves?

No. It measures the bacteria in the water only. It says nothing about litter, jellyfish, waves, currents, lifeguards or facilities.

Why is my favourite beach not on the list?

Only the beaches officially designated for bathing are monitored. A beach can be pleasant without being on the list, and the occupied part of the island is not covered.

How often is the list updated?

Once a year, when the European Environment Agency publishes the results of the season, usually in early summer.
