Road closures and traffic in Cyprus: how to read this page

The Cyprus Police announce what affects the road network: a road closed after a collision, lanes closed for works on a motorway, heavy traffic at a junction, roads closed for an event or because of the weather. This page gathers those announcements in one place, newest first.

Every morning the Police also publish a short summary of the main roads, and they keep a full list of the road works on motorways and in towns. Both are linked from this page. The announcements are written in Greek and are shown exactly as published.

Source: Cyprus Police, road network announcements. For an emergency on the road call 112 or 199.

Where do the road announcements come from?

From the road network section of the Cyprus Police news site. Cyprus Atlas reads it every few minutes and shows each announcement with a link to the Police page.

Why are the announcements in Greek?

The Police publish them in Greek only. They are shown as written, so that nothing is changed in translation. The labels on this page (closed road, heavy traffic, road works) tell you what kind of announcement each one is.

How do I know if a motorway is closed?

Look for the announcements marked "Closed road". They name the motorway, the stretch and the direction. When a closure is planned for works, it is also in the Police list of road works linked at the top of the page.

Which roads does this cover?

The motorways between Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Ayia Napa, main roads in the towns, and mountain roads when they close because of snow, rockfall or fire.

How long does an announcement stay on the page?

Three days. Older announcements are history rather than the state of the roads.

Who do I call about a problem on the road?

For an emergency call 112 or 199. The Police Traffic Department in each district handles collisions and traffic arrangements.
