How the school year works in Cyprus

Public schools in Cyprus open in September and close in June. Lessons stop for two weeks at Christmas and two weeks at Easter, and on the national and religious holidays in between.

Easter moves every year because it follows the Orthodox calendar, so the spring break and Green Monday fall on different dates each year. The dates on this page are the ones announced by the Ministry of Education for public schools; private schools set their own calendars.

When do schools close for Christmas in Cyprus?

In the 2026-2027 school year primary schools are closed from 23 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, and secondary schools from 24 December 2026 to 6 January 2027. Lessons resume on 7 January.

When are the Easter school holidays in 2027?

From Holy Monday, 26 April 2027, for two weeks. Orthodox Easter Sunday is on 2 May 2027. Primary schools return on Monday 10 May.

When does the summer holiday start?

For primary school pupils the summer holiday of 2027 starts on 17 June and lasts until 10 September.

Do private schools have the same holidays?

Not necessarily. Private and international schools publish their own calendars, often with a half-term break in October and February. Check with the school.

Is every public holiday also a school holiday?

Yes. Schools are closed on all public holidays, and also on a few school-only days such as the local saint's day of each community.
