Good to know before you walk

What do the difficulty levels mean?

They are the Department of Forests’ own. Easy (1): gentle gradient, for all ages. Moderate (2): sudden climbs or descents or rough, narrow stretches, for adults in fair to good shape. Difficult (3): steep, rough or slippery terrain, for adults in very good shape, not for young children.

When is the best time to walk?

Spring and autumn. In summer, walk early in the morning, carry plenty of water and choose the shaded mountain trails; in winter the high Troodos trails can have snow and ice.

Is it safe to walk alone?

It is better to walk with others, stay on the marked path and tell someone your route. Carry water, a phone and a first aid kit, and a torch if you may be out after dark.

Who do I call in an emergency?

For a forest fire call 1407 (24 hours, free). For an injury or any other emergency call 112.

Can I light a fire or a barbecue on a trail?

Only in the fireplaces of official picnic sites, and never on days of high fire danger. The fire danger for each district is on our fire danger page.
