About this event

Two to One (2024), a German-language comedy with English subtitles, screens at Pantheon Theatre in Nicosia on 4 November 2026 at 20:30, organised by the Goethe-Institut Cyprus as part of the Weeks of the German Language. Free entry.

What to expect Directed by Natja Brunckhorst, the film is inspired by true events surrounding German reunification. As part of the currency union of 1990, hundreds of millions of GDR-Marks were secretly stored underground in the city of Halberstadt — nearly 400 tons of banknotes. To this day, no one knows exactly how much was taken. Brunckhorst uses this extraordinary historical footnote as the springboard for a warm, witty and surprisingly moving story.

Set in the summer of 1990, lifelong friends Maren (Sandra Hüller), Robert (Max Riemelt) and Volker (Ronald Zehrfeld) stumble upon the hidden stash and — together with their neighbours — devise a clever scheme to exchange the now-worthless currency for real goods. What begins as an adventure becomes a defining chapter in their lives: a love-and-friendship comedy about money, justice, and a summer when everything still felt possible.
